To get that spring you must first flex the legs which you then get to extend into the jump which is thereby greater. Go ahead and see what happens when you attempt to lift off into a jump without bending the legs at the knees. go on, try it. you are left standing there pressing down with the muscles in the toes and soles of the feet, a very nice exercise in isometrics . But a jump it ain't.

people bend their knees when they jump to 1. jump higher and 2. so they don't hurt themselves when they land. you can end up hurting your knees really bad if you're not careful!!

So you can use the muscles of your calves and thighs. If you didn't bend your knees, you would be limited to using your toe muscles. Try it; you'll see.
